How to reach out to busier people

  1. If you have gotten their number via a mutual friend, the best thing is to send a text instead of calling right away.
  2. When you have their email and they prefer email, make the best use of that opportunity, instead of pushing for “let’s get on a call”
  3. If you need something from them, please ask directly, instead of saying “looking forward for possible synergies, thus, reaching out to you.” People who value their time love this. And would love to help you, if you make it specific.
  4. When you get into a call/meeting with them, go prepared. Do not let entitlement grab you. You have no idea how much people love someone who respects their opinions and time, instead of merely “nice to meet you, and I was thinking that…” phrase 41 times.
  5. Know that instead of feeling bad they didn’t get back, you can always follow up a week or so later, if the former conversation hinted at that. Mostly, you will have an answer. No answer is also an answer. Don’t hold it in your heart against them. Go back. Prepare better. Reach out to them again. And you never know, when things click!
