When I had an enviable job…

When I was working as an Internal Auditor, it was an enviable job.

Almost every colleague outside the department wanted to get in there.

After years of struggle, a colleague and a friend in another department did finally make it to the audit department. After a few weeks, over some casual chit chat with him, we all asked him how was his experience so far.

“I had no idea you all worked so much,” came the exhausted reply. He continued, “I used to think you all just travelled a lot, sat in a separate office, and laughed. But man, there is so much thinking involved.”

Honestly, I wouldn’t blame that colleague.

Every job appears easy when someone else is doing it.

What is helpful to understand is some people are like ducks, they paddle hard in water in order to look effortless to you. While others put their head down and not “show off” how much they are working.

But almost always good results are an outcome of hard work. And some bit of ulterior focus. True for every industry. Not just Internal Audit.

The question then, is, whose work are you envying right now?

The grass is not greener on the other side.
The grass is greener where you work harder.
