Constraints and accountability

I had been struggling to show up for my evening meditation off-late. Its timings are 6.30-7.30 pm.

No matter how much I tried, I would succumb to my procrastination. Which in turn, would lead to a ripple effect of “oh, I’ll do it from 8-9 pm”. Invariably, it would never happen.

Something happened last week, and at our spiritual class, we decided to meditate in the center every evening from 6.30-7.30 pm.

Here’s the kicker: It was just a deal for 21 days.

The best part is, I was travelling exactly after 21 days.

And bam! It’s been exactly a week today, and I have never been more consistent.

I plan my dinner earlier. I plan my walks after my return. I organise my work accordingly.

A smooth sail after months of trying.

Lessons learnt:

  1. Don’t commit forever. Commit for a small amount of time.
  2. Accountability helps. True for me at least. Now there are friends at the center who know that I show up every day. Cannot skip!
  3. Micro goals help. For me, it was just about having dinner on time, and leaving for the center. Rest was all normal.

In life, when we often think discipline imprisons us, I’d rather say nothing liberates more than discipline. Period.
