My cousin has come home. For no more than 5 minutes. She is just like my sister. When my father comes out of his room, he tells my Mom to send a stool to a neighbour. It’s urgent. He is pestering. They need it for Janmashtami celebrations.
What baffles me is how my father thinks a daughter coming home for 5 minutes is less important than a celebration that will last till midnight.
My maama wants my advice as a CA. He has reached out to my Mom twice. I explained to my Mom in simple words that I do not do core CA work anymore. Even when I used to, I was in a job as an Internal Auditor. I was never a practising CA, even if we keep the free consultation matter aside for a moment.
I gently refused for the above logical reason, and also because I spent 2-3 days last week socialising with family, so now I really need to catch up with work. But my Mom’s relative-compliant brain refuses to understand either of the above logic. A girl sitting at home is deemed free. The price I pay for being at home with them for only 8 days, compensating for the 3 months I didn’t show up for.
I already know the tonality in which she will tell Maama that I have been working. Expecting empathy is too big a meaningless weight a girl holds.
I often wonder, these are the parents that literally rub their bodies incapable only in the service of their offspring, despite that when the time arises to stand for them against the trivialities of the world, they are the first ones to abandon us, and take the world’s stride.
Every single day I thank my stars for never becoming a parent and ruining someone’s self worth, and living in a city far from the place where an offspring’s worth is shrunk to infinite irrelevance.
