It is a gift, because you get to lead people. You have a responsibility to show people that people in authority can act responsibly.
It is scary because when you fumble, you have to be responsible enough to be aware of it, and apologise. Becoming more authoritative when you have clearly made a mistake is the exact thing that takes your authority away, even when you figuratively still have it.
Responsibility is what truly makes authority accountable.
