Unspoken LinkedIn connection rules

On LinkedIn, I accept only two kinds of requests:

  1. People whose profile says they could be my potential clients.
  2. People who send a personal note along with the request

It may sound selfish, especially the second one, but I believe if we want someone to be professionally connected with us, we just can’t send a connection request and hope for things to work out.

It merely adds the number of connections and followers, without any value addition to your network or their work.

PS: You have no idea how many wonderful, impossible to reach people are available for being connected, if you go deep down into their profile, research a bit on them, and send a personal note. I myself get such notes and am awed by the people who take 5-10 minutes to make a real connections, instead of just shooting their shot for many people and landing none.
