Many many many years back, I guess it’s 14 or 15 years back, I had an argument with a friend.
He ended the argument with “if you were not important to me, I would not have spent ₹4000-5,000 on my phone speaking to you.”
Touche´.
But so casually cruel in the name of being honest.
However, that conversation broke my heart in a way I have never been able to make up.
Which is why, I have now become hyper aware of always paying my tab in all conversations, all friends, and everywhere there are more than one people involved.
As a matter of fact, I recently read the beautiful beautiful book The Cheat Sheet by Sarah Adams (everyone must read it). One of the things that stayed with me was how Bree would have to rely on Nathan’s money for the rest of their lives (in the book of course). It was incredible to know that Nathan felt joy when she finally allowed him to spend money on her.
It is fiction, but it never made me stop thinking.
Do people really spend on people they love out of joy?
Asking for a friend.
