Starting from zero

All the influencers you follow, none of them were born with the followers they have.

Also, none of them is Shah Rukh Khan’s kid.

So, when you feel that they got “lucky”
When you believe that you just can’t “get there”
When you think others had privileges “you don’t have”
When self doubts starts encircling you
When success seems possible only by magic,

Remember that…

Everyone started at zero. Everyone.

If the ones who made it had something special, they had this:

  • Breathtaking consistency
  • Belief in themselves when the world was busy rebuking them
  • Trust that if it is possible for others, it is possible for them as well
  • Learning from failure
  • Learning from others’ success

And many more pieces of the puzzle that get arranged once you actually step into the pool.

Start from 0. You did so in school. See where you are now. Start again, for a different curriculum of life you want to be living for.

Do your parents also say this?

I did a sin.
I opened the fridge today.

Is it really a sin?
It is, if you have to put something back and you have parents that trust you to the moon and back:)

Lol.

So my Mom saw me putting a steel dabba of halwa back into the fridge, when she remarked, if you are unable to do it, let it be, I’ll do it.

Yes Mom, I’ve lived most of my adult life away from home. Gone through heartbreaks without you being aware of it. Living in the capital of the country figuring out life. And lo and behold, I won’t have the awareness to put a dabba into the fridge. Such fun.

Anyway, yes parents are suffering and trying their best, but, sometimes you have to put a virtual gulab jamun in your mouth and stay silent.

For your sake.

And if you still want to take some action, I wrote about it in the newsletter I sent today. You can read it here.

The best hack to be peaceful

In the last week of 2020, I removed the email app from my phone.

Little had I expected, my screen time went down drastically.

So, going to continue that in 2021 as well. Even if there is an extreme news of me making it to the best seller list, I’ll be able to enjoy it when I am peacefully sitting in a place to read that email. Quick notifications aren’t a great place to celebrate.

Maybe will try that will WhatsApp soon:)

The usual boring stuff

Much of our lives is the usual boring stuff.

Extreme events – such as a job promotion, getting your dream client, getting that deal, your first pair of Nike’s, no matter how eventful – they’re extremely rare.

Which brings us to the boring stuff, and make the best of it.

How to make the best of it – no one can answer that for you, only you can.

But if you keep making the best of each boring day – trust me, you will have ideas to an extent of just extreme events.

Only one caveat: Keep working on your habits and the usual mundane stuff of doing the right things while watching someone else’s happening Insta feed.

Are you still “fat”?

As a kid, a neighbourhood uncle used to call me “moti”, which is a Hindi translation for “fat girl”.

Not that I was fat, rather because as I introspect now, that was merely a reflection of his un-developed brain’s immunopsychological response to bringing people down.

People do it all the time:

You don’t appear happy, while in reality, they aren’t.
I can’t love you, because being devoid of love was how I was raised, and changing myself is a mammoth task.
I won’t update my LinkedIn profile and network with people, because struggling to find a job is how I finally get a job, and that struggle keeps me safe.

The blankets we throw at others are virtually the ones we are covering ourselves with.

Which brings me to this neighbourhood Uncle.
So when he used to address me “Moti” as a kid, I used to retaliate. Get angry. Cry. Scream. Literally beg not to call me moti.

Today morning, while returning from my meditation class, that Uncle saw me again. And he called me “moti” thrice. And I moved on, without responding.

Sometimes, what we were years back, we don’t drift from there even a bit.
I’m glad I wasn’t that today morning.
I feel for him that he hasn’t grown a bit in years.

So, my question to you is: “Are you still fat,” where “fat” means the thickness of the brain that makes it almost impossible for new knowledge to percolate?

Or have you lost that weight and become lean, where you allow the new muscles to form and happily let go of the stagnant ones?

So there are two ways

Way 1:

People may make mistakes. That’s why, when you make a rectification in the email, send a fresh email, instead of a top-up.

This is usually a “don’t use your brain because you don’t have one and I anyway don’t trust you” approach. No one grows with it.

Way 2:

Making people more attentive.

How? Through meditation at work (even WFH), no-work policy on weekends, and endorsing silence more than loudness.

The world, after all, is no different from we ought to have created it to be.

I felt soooo happy!

A friend asked me about a book recommendation on mental health.

I was soooo soooo happy!

Gave her my favourite one, along with a few that could rank after it.

But you know what, the feeling was epic.

Which brings me to…ahem ahem!

I will start writing book summaries soon. Even the thought is good enough to keep me up at night. However, when you sleep well, you create well.

So, see you all soon with consistent book reviews. Whoa, I could die in a library 🙂

PS: When my friend asked for book reccos, I didn’t tell her the names or Amazon links, I clicked pictures of the books I love and sent those. Totally loved it!!!

Wanna go back and change the past?

The past was horrible.
How could they do it to you?
How could you do it to yourself?

Do these thoughts sometimes encircle your mind? Like if that person from the past came back to you right now, you would hit them and vent out all your frustration?

Here’s the catch baby: Even if you did that, that won’t take away the past and its bruises.

To heal yourself, you have to heal yourself.

That is difficult.
That is the real hard work.
That will break you down into pieces several times before it actually makes you.
That will make you question yourself over and over again.
However, that will also be the right thing for you.

What’s the point of being behind those prison bars when on the sides of those bars is open space to run anywhere you need to?

The biggest thing in life

The state with which you enter your home.
The way you walk from the parking entrance to your vehicle.
How much are you ready to ignore to make your happiness a priority.
How much you’re ready to endure to make others are happy
How to look at the person in the mirror – smiling or critical
The sigh or the joy on waking up.
Water bottle kept next to your laptop.
Not using phone because you want to read.
The general convo drifting around how bad your luck was, or how hopeful life is!

Small things that define our life in biggest ways.

People that make you anxious

Have a pattern.

They will be unkind to you 10 times, and kind to you once. So that they can lean into that kindness and make you feel worthless 10 more times.

It happens in so many relationships of all kinds that it isn’t funny.

Here is my advice: Go build yourself. Go surround yourself with right people. Run away from wrong people. Even though they will always make you feel you are wrong, and spineless. Even if they call you names and question your character.

The safest people will always love you like a human being and not like vending machine, even if (especially if) you have made a massive error

Making a career move

Someone reached out to me on LinkedIn yesterday, and really appreciated my decision of moving from a well-established job of an Internal Auditor, to full-time content writer.

A lot of people remark that it is a courageous move, however here’s my take:

(PS: This is a stoic move, not the I worked really hard part. We’ll cover that part later:D)

– God moves in mysterious ways, his wonders to perform (Truly remarked Napoleon Hill in Think and Grow Rich)

– If you have worked really hard and are doing it daily, the Law of thoughts will always be there for you.

– This also means, that the opposite of a good thought will also affect us, if we are really willing to listen.

If you don’t believe this, read it again. And you will see the difference.

Just the same emotion

Do you get the same engagement on all your social media posts?

Do you feel the same emotions for your parents always?

Do you like having chocolate cake / pizza / (your favourite dish) for all meals of the day?

Do you like watching your favourite movie every single day?

Do you like going to the same place for vacation every year?

We want novelty. That’s where the brain’s sweet spot lies.
So when you don’t receive the same responses from people. They have their patterns, and places.

You’ll find yourself to be more peaceful when you live from that awareness.

Maa Papa 💖

All of a sudden, I’ve enjoyed being with my family now.

Now that vaccine is almost there, now that there is a job to look up to, now that I’ll be back to Delhi somewhere by the end of winter, I’ve already started missing my parents.

They’re (not so much) weird for me, and I guess so am I for them.

This moment, is all you have!

As a line from one of my favourite songs goes: “Reh jayengi, yeh nishaaniyaan, rahein naa rahein hum! Aa jee le ek pal mein sau janam!”

How to get what you want

How can you get what you want?

One option is very valid: Try. Put in the efforts. Do the hard work. Which is all very beautiful and necessary.

There’s another option as well: See yourself as awareness, just aware of everything.

It takes a lifetime to learn the second one. But when we do, we won’t read a blog titled “How to get what you want” 🙂

Thanksgiving is all about…

Thanksgiving is all about…

• Being grateful to your farmers, because without them, even pizza wasn’t possible.

• Being grateful for the electricity, otherwise how would geyser operate?

• A thousand more things tbh, but today, let’s stop with the fact that we have almost survived 2020 stronger and better.

What else could thanksgiving be about?

I want to…

I also want to have as much engagement as GaryVee.

I also want to have as many views as MostlySane.

I also want to not think a bit before buying Zara clothes.

I also want to…

We want to do a ton of things.
And probably that will take a lot of time.

That’s not the problem.

Problem is that we are not even starting.
Problem is that we keep waiting for that ride without getting out on the road.
Problem is we don’t trust ourselves.

Problem is, we don’t even know that we are the problem.

How will we ever get what we want, if we never get out of our own way and take action?

“The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.”
– Confucius

What is it that you are waiting for?

Wow! Just wow!!!

Last Friday, a founder and CEO of one of the groundbreaking startups in India approached me on LinkedIn. He wanted to speak to me for writing content for them.

When I responded to their DM to know more about the work, his first response was: “Thanks for the response,” and then we talked further.

Who does that in a mean world? Such a kind soul! He could write a social media post and get 100’s of writers in less than an hour, and still responding me with kindness? Wow!

So we spoke further and scheduled a meeting three days hence.

Almost two-and-a-half hours prior to the meeting, he sent me an email informing the meeting had to be inadvertently cancelled due to a family emergency. Not only that, he ensured to DM me on LinkedIn as well.

Of course, I understood and replied with an understanding and affirmative response.

That’s not the point. The point is he did not “need” to inform me before not showing up for a meeting, yet he informed me at two places – that too when it was a family emergency.

So so sooo fortunate to be working with such generous and kind folks. People who value the time and work of others just as theirs and not taking their art for granted are a priceless asset. Always.

Just that I got lucky, because the world doesn’t owe us anything. All the kindness and ease from clients like him is always a blessing to be bestowed upon. If you are one such kind soul reading this, thank you to you too! You rock <3 🙂

Are you also feeling lost?

There are different ways and functions of feeling lost.

You could be doing well financially.
You could be doing well in your relationships.

But, the relationship that you have with yourself, that one is a dangerous one.

That is what leads us to feeling lost.

There are differing ways to solve the problem. Start like this: Where is one hour where you could take control of your life?

Start with one hour in twenty four. Small part is chew-able, doable, and relatable.
It will make you more confident, powerful, and one day at a time – less lost. Isn’t that what we all are looking for?
